Marketing agency

After being laid off, I spent a year freelancing before joining a small marketing agency as a mid-level designer. There were red flags from the start: no proper project management, tasks sent through chat, unrealistic deadlines, and pressure to work weekends. The work was also below my skill level, but I accepted because it was remote and salary was good. I raised concerns and suggested improvements, but they were mostly ignored. After three months, I was let go for being “not a good fit,” despite having good relationships with most colleagues. I also felt I was unfairly compared to someone who had a very different role. A colleague in a marketing role was earning about a half of my salary, so I suspect that may have also played a role. Now they don’t have any designers, and the non-designers are making the banners themselves?! It left me wondering: Is this just what small teams are like, or did I have an unusually weird experience? What would you have done?
