Was wondering if I could improve performance and reduce volatility in my bond holdings?

Typically, increasing diversification will reduce performance but provide a better risk adjusted return. If you want better performance, you'll need to take on more risk, eg junk bonds.

I always ask this question: What is the purpose/role of bonds in your portfolio? Once you know, buy bonds that meet those needs accordingly.
