Shooting at Wheeling hotel leaves 1 killed, 1 injured; police investigating

A shooting at a hotel Sunday in suburban Wheeling left one man dead and another injured, police said, with an investigation ongoing and officials looking for witnesses.

About 6:51 p.m., the Wheeling Police Department responded to the MainStay Suites at 6:51 p.m. in the 8000 block of Capital Drive for a report of shots fired. Wheeling officers and others from neighboring police departments arrived at the scene and found two men suffering from gunshot wounds.

Officers worked to provide emergency medical treatment until the Wheeling Fire Department arrived, police said.

Both men were transported to a nearby hospital, where one was pronounced dead. The other survived his injuries, police said.

Identification of the men were not provided pending notification of immediate family.

The Wheeling Police Department Investigations Unit and the Major Case Assistance Team were investigating. Wheeling police encouraged anyone who witnessed the incident to contact investigators at 847-459-2690.
