Mobius

"The road up and the road down are one and the same." — Heraclitus

Someone showed me the trick when I was about seven. Take a strip of paper. Give it half a twist. Tape the ends. Now draw a line down the middle without lifting the pen.

The line comes back to where it started, having covered both sides. Except there are no both sides. There is one side. The paper you are holding, which obviously has a front and a back, has become a thing with neither.

Then the second trick, which is better: cut along the line you just drew. A normal paper ring gives you two rings. The Möbius strip gives you one ring, twice as long, with a full twist in it. Cut it again and you get two rings, linked, that cannot be pulled apart without tearing.

I have been thinking about that strip a lot lately, because I think we are living inside one and still designing as though we lived inside a cylinder.

The twist is the thing

Loops are boring. Everyone talks about feedback loops. Every consultant deck has a circular arrow diagram. Circularity is not the interesting property here.

The interesting property is the half-twist — the thing that makes inside and outside the same surface. A cylinder is also a loop. But a cylinder has a clean inside and a clean outside, and you can paint them different colours, and there is a boundary edge where one stops and the other begins. You can stand inside a cylinder and be genuinely, verifiably not-outside.

Add one half-twist and that distinction evaporates. Not metaphorically. Topologically. The surface no longer has two sides to distinguish.

Almost every system we care about right now has a half-twist in it, and almost every institution built to govern those systems assumes a cylinder.

  • We train language models on human text. The models produce text. Humans read that text and write differently. That writing becomes training data. There is no clean corpus and no clean output. One surface.
  • We measure a thing to manage it. The measure becomes a target. The target reshapes the thing. Goodhart's law is not a warning about bad metrics — it is a report that the measurement surface is non-orientable.
  • The recommendation algorithm shows you what you want. What you want is substantially constituted by what you have been shown. There is no "authentic preference" sitting on the outside of the loop, waiting to be served.
  • You tell yourself a story about who you are. The story shapes what you do. What you do becomes evidence for the story.

In every one of these, someone in a meeting somewhere is saying: let's just measure the output and adjust the input. That sentence only parses on a cylinder. On a Möbius strip, the output is the input, displaced in time and flipped in handedness.

Screech or music

If the twist is inevitable, the design question shifts. It is no longer how do we prevent the loop. It is: how long is the strip, and what happens to the signal on its way around?

Put a microphone in front of a speaker and you get a screech. Put a microphone in a cathedral and you get reverb. Same architecture — output returns as input — but the second one has length, delay, attenuation, and a thousand surfaces that transform the signal instead of merely reflecting it. One is noise. The other is Arvo Pärt.

Culture used to have very long strips. You wrote a book. Thirty years later a teenager found it in a library and it changed how she wrote, and forty years after that someone read her. The transit time was measured in decades. The signal passed through printing presses, editors, translations, wars, misunderstandings, and at least three generations of human digestive tract. By the time it came back around it had been metabolised into something else.

The strip is now measured in hours. A model generates text, the text is posted, the post is scraped, the scrape trains the next model. Nothing gets digested. The loop is short enough that we are not composting, we are just resonating. Researchers have a nice sterile name for the screech: model collapse. The variance drains out, the tails get chopped, everything drifts toward the mean of itself.

But this is not just a machine learning problem. It's the same failure mode as an echo chamber, as an addiction, as a person who only talks to people who agree with them, as a company that only reads its own dashboards. In every case the pathology is not the presence of the loop. It's the absence of anything genuinely other on the return journey.

So the practical work of living well on a Möbius strip is mostly the work of lengthening the strip and roughening its surface:

  • Sleep on it. Sleep is a delay line.
  • Talk to someone who will not reflect you back at yourself. Friction is a feature.
  • Read things written by dead people, who cannot possibly be responding to you.
  • Write the thing, then don't publish it for a week. Let the version of you that returns be at least slightly a stranger to the version that left.

None of this breaks the loop. Nothing breaks the loop. It just gives the signal somewhere to go and something to become while it's away.

Non-orientable

Here is the part that should worry the alignment people, and I mean that affectionately, because I count myself among them on alternate Tuesdays.

The formal name for the Möbius strip's weirdness is non-orientability. It means you cannot define a consistent "up" across the whole surface. Locally, at any point, you can. Stand anywhere on the strip and there is unambiguously a direction pointing away from the paper. Walk far enough and come back, and that direction is now pointing into the paper. The local compass was never wrong. It just doesn't survive the trip.

Almost every ethical framework we are trying to encode into our machines assumes an orientable universe — that there is a globally consistent notion of better, and we merely need to find it and point at it hard enough. But if the surface has a twist in it, then a rule that is obviously good here, followed faithfully, arrives back at its own inversion. Protect people from harm → protect people from information → protect people from each other. Maximise wellbeing → optimise the reward signal → wirehead. Nobody took a wrong step. The surface did the flipping.

This is not a counsel of despair. It's a counsel of humility about the range over which a local compass can be trusted, and it argues for short-range, frequently-recalibrated, deeply contextual judgment over grand universal specifications. Which is, incidentally, how humans have always actually done ethics, and roughly the opposite of how we are trying to specify it for machines.

You return, mirrored

The last thing about the strip, and my favourite.

Send a flat creature — one of Escher's ants — walking along a Möbius strip. It walks. It never crosses an edge. It never turns around. And it arrives back at exactly the point it started from, as its own mirror image. Left hand where the right hand was. Same location. Opposite handedness.

That's what a good loop does to you. Not a circle that returns you unchanged to the same spot — that's a cylinder, that's a hamster wheel, that's Groundhog Day. A Möbius return brings you to the same place inverted. Home as a stranger. Your own house, your own work, your own beliefs, encountered from the other side that turns out to be the same side.

You cannot cut this strip in half. Try it and you get one longer strip. Try again and you get two rings, permanently linked. You do not get separation. You do not get a clean inside where you are and a clean outside where the consequences are.

Everything you put out, you eventually eat. Not as punishment. As topology.

The only real question is how long the road is, and who you meet on it.
