This is Lucas's dumbest idea.
We don't need "balance" between selflessness and selfishness. We're plenty selfish all the time. We need to constantly fight against and grind down selfishness constantly to make life tolerable. Not give way to it for balance.
Lucas's idea does track with Western misunderstandings of Eastern balance. Buddhists and Taoists aren't balancing good vs. evil. They're balancing two different ways - chaos vs. law, light vs. darkness, and saying both are needed. Not saying that everyone needs to commit one crime to cancel out each good deed.
