I had a teacher in high school who was the pilot of the Utah Man, a B-24. Among other exploits, he was in Operation Tidal Wave in 1943 on Ploesti and they came in low.
The flak towers loomed large in his memory. He said the bomber directly in front of him flew right over a tower, burst into flames, and went down. He was headed straight at it, so he banked hard, and only the end of his wing went over the tower. Six feet of that wing was shot clean off.
