In 1974, and for several years afterwards in Dungeons & Dragons, we raw dogged our characters' stat rolls. Straight 3d6, STR up through CHA.
You know what? It worked just fine, because what happened is that anyone with a score of 9-12 was perfectly able to function, and when someone got a roll of 16 or something, they were cool and amazing.
Syndrome warned us - if you boost your rolls so EVERYONE is super, then NO ONE is super. Agree?
