Comment on So, You “10x’d” Your Work… by Annie

Thank you for the article, it helps me starting to think about how to explain my problems with the new ways of working to others. I work as a developer, used to be a tester and now I am seriously considering changing my career to become a gardener but I want to ask you what you think around managing expectations.

Regarding 8, how can I make sure reducing slop working next to these 10x people? How do I explain to others so that they understand that the street was busy when they keep telling me "You have such a fast car, why didn't you get here sooner?!" or "Why didn't you finish your meal?!" How do I in the best way act as responsible of my little corner of the kennel of too many new features?

[James' Reply: I don't know of any answer that is better than the one that you already know-- try to talk sense into these people. When they show me something that they claim to have created in record time, I ask them how they know it works. I point out that they have no proof that it works. Of course they point to simplistic "tests" that they run. I challenge those tests. But such challenges take energy and time to follow through with. Meanwhile, they may not care to give me that time.

Perhaps you are old enough to remember the early days of cell phones. When cell phones first came out, people were talking and texting while driving. It was considered normal. It took some years before society concluded that holding a cell phone while driving is a really bad idea. Personally, I became convinced of the problem only after a very near miss where I came inches from killing a motorcyclist because I was looking at a text. This scared me into better behavior.

Companies may ned to try and fail with AI enough to realize the consequences of irresponsible behavior.]
