You are running on Windows (PowerShell). Get this Flask project ("Smart-Elect", an e-voting app with OpenCV face recognition + MySQL) running locally, end to end. Work autonomously but ask me before destructive database actions or if a prerequisite cannot be installed.
## Context (already verified in this repo)
- Entry point: run.py -> app.run(host="127.0.0.1", port=5000, debug=True, threaded=True, processes=1)
- App factory: app/__init__.py, calls db.create_all() on startup (tables auto-create)
- Config: config.py reads .env via python-dotenv
- DB: MySQL via PyMySQL. Default URI expected: mysql+pymysql://root:root1@localhost/evoting_db
- Requirements: requirements.txt (Flask 2.3.3, SQLAlchemy, PyMySQL, cryptography 41.0.7, numpy 1.26.4, opencv-contrib-python-headless 4.10.0.84, Pillow, etc.)
- .env is gitignored, so it may be missing. If missing, create it (Step 4).
- DO NOT use setup_database.py (it needs mysql-connector-python, which is not in requirements).
- DO NOT use run_with_python313.ps1 (stale hardcoded path; the pinned cryptography/numpy/opencv wheels do not support Python 3.13).
- Face capture uses server-side cv2.VideoCapture(0), so the server must run on this laptop with a working webcam. Not fatal for startup.
## Rules
- Use PowerShell. Run all commands from the project root.
- Do not commit anything. Do not rewrite application logic.
- Prefer Python 3.11 or 3.12. Avoid 3.13.
- Keep the server running in the background and report the URL at the end.
## Step 1: Verify location and prerequisites
1. Confirm we are in the project root: run.py, requirements.txt, app/, config.py exist. If not, ask me for the path.
2. Check versions: `python --version`, `py -0p`, `mysql --version`, `git --version`.
3. Report what is missing and stop if Python or MySQL is absent.
## Step 2: Create virtualenv and install dependencies
1. Create: `py -3.12 -m venv .venv` (fallback: `python -m venv .venv`).
2. Activate: `.\.venv\Scripts\Activate.ps1`
If blocked by policy: `Set-ExecutionPolicy -Scope Process -ExecutionPolicy Bypass` then retry.
3. Upgrade pip: `python -m pip install --upgrade pip`
4. Install: `python -m pip install -r requirements.txt`
5. If a package fails to build (especially cryptography/opencv/numpy), retry with:
`python -m pip install --only-binary=:all: -r requirements.txt`
If it still fails, tell me and recommend switching to Python 3.11/3.12. Do not silently bump versions.
6. Sanity check: `python -c "import flask, cv2, numpy, cryptography, pymysql; print('imports ok')"`
## Step 3: Ensure MySQL is running and the database exists
1. Check service: `Get-Service *mysql*`
Start it if stopped: `Start-Service mysql` (or the service name shown; may need an elevated shell).
2. Connect and create the DB. Ask me for the MySQL root password if `root1` does not work:
`mysql -u root -p -e "CREATE DATABASE IF NOT EXISTS evoting_db CHARACTER SET utf8mb4 COLLATE utf8mb4_unicode_ci;"`
3. Verify: `mysql -u root -p -e "SHOW DATABASES LIKE 'evoting_db';"`
4. If the root password is not `root1`, update SQLALCHEMY_DATABASE_URI in .env accordingly (URL-encode special characters in the password).
## Step 4: Create or verify .env in the project root
If .env exists, read it and verify it has SECRET_KEY, ENCRYPTION_KEY, SQLALCHEMY_DATABASE_URI. If it is missing, create it with this content (generate real keys, do not use placeholders):
Security Keys
SECRET_KEY=
ENCRYPTION_KEY=
Database
SQLALCHEMY_DATABASE_URI=mysql+pymysql://root:root1@localhost/evoting_db
SQLALCHEMY_TRACK_MODIFICATIONS=False
DB_HOST=localhost
DB_USER=root
DB_PASSWORD=root1
DB_NAME=evoting_db
Flask
FLASK_APP=run.py
FLASK_ENV=development
Admin (informational only; the app does not auto-create admin)
ADMIN_EMAIL=admin@smartelect.com
ADMIN_PASSWORD=Admin@123
Mail (optional for local run; leave dummy values if no SMTP account)
MAIL_SERVER=localhost
MAIL_PORT=1025
MAIL_USE_TLS=False
MAIL_USERNAME=
MAIL_PASSWORD=
MAIL_DEFAULT_SENDER=admin@smartelect.com
Notes: the ENCRYPTION_KEY must be a valid Fernet key. Email failures are non-fatal (they are caught and logged). Do not print secrets back to me.
## Step 5: Initialize tables and create an admin
1. Tables auto-create on first app start (db.create_all()). Do not run smartElect.sql (it is a scratch file).
2. Create the admin user via the registered CLI command:
`flask --app run.py create-admin admin@smartelect.com Admin@123 Admin User ADMIN001`
Expected: "Admin user ... created successfully".
If `flask` is not on PATH, use `python -m flask --app run.py create-admin ...`
3. Verify it exists:
`mysql -u root -p evoting_db -e "SELECT id,email,is_admin FROM user;"`
## Step 6: Run the server and verify
1. Start in background:
`Start-Process -FilePath ".\.venv\Scripts\python.exe" -ArgumentList "run.py" -RedirectStandardOutput "logs\server_stdout.log" -RedirectStandardError "logs\server_stderr.log" -WindowStyle Hidden`
(Ensure the `logs` folder exists first: `New-Item -ItemType Directory -Force logs`)
2. Wait ~8 seconds, then verify:
- `Get-NetTCPConnection -LocalPort 5000 -State Listen`
- `Invoke-WebRequest -UseBasicParsing http://127.0.0.1:5000/ | Select-Object -ExpandProperty StatusCode` (expect 200)
3. Tail `logs\server_stdout.log` and confirm "Running on http://127.0.0.1:5000" and "Face recognition system initialized successfully" with no traceback.
4. If startup fails, read the log, fix the cause, and retry. Common causes:
- MySQL access denied -> wrong password in .env (Step 3)
- ModuleNotFoundError -> venv not activated / deps not installed
- "No module named cv2.face" -> opencv-contrib-python-headless not installed
- Port 5000 in use -> `Get-NetTCPConnection -LocalPort 5000` then stop the owning process (ask me first)
## Step 7: Final report
Tell me:
- The URL to open: http://127.0.0.1:5000
- Admin login: admin@smartelect.com / Admin@123 (created in Step 5)
- Where logs are: logs\server_stdout.log
- How to stop the server: `Get-NetTCPConnection -LocalPort 5000 | Select -ExpandProperty OwningProcess | ForEach-Object { Stop-Process -Id $_ -Force }`
- Any warnings (webcam, mail) that are non-fatal.
## Known issues to report, not necessarily fix
- If face registration fails with "cannot access local variable 'best_face'", that is a pre-existing bug in app/utils/face_recognition.py capture_face(); registration still succeeds without a face encoding.
- If login appears to not persist on http://127.0.0.1:5000, config.py sets SESSION_COOKIE_SECURE=True. Only if that happens, temporarily set SESSION_COOKIE_SECURE and REMEMBER_COOKIE_SECURE to False in config.py and restart.
