OpenAI Expands ChatGPT Ads to 26 More Countries, Says It Has More Than 100,000 Advertisers

OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT ads to 26 more countries as it tries to turn advertising into a bigger source of revenue to help cover its AI costs. OpenAI also said more than 100,000 advertisers now use the platform, up from 20,000 in late August.

The ad platform, which launched in February, is now available in 83 countries, up from 63 in September, the company said. The new markets include Argentina, Chile and Colombia, as well as countries in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

The expansion follows earlier rollouts to seven Southeast Asian countries and Taiwan in September, and to 31 European markets, including Germany, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Norway and Denmark, in August.

In recent months, the company has released a series of products and tools aimed at advertisers, even as it has cut ad rates. Those moves have helped draw many more advertisers.

OpenAI has also been hiring quickly: nearly half of the roughly 140 OpenAI employees working on ads joined between July and September, according to Crustdata, which tracks employees’ public profiles. Meta Platforms, where OpenAI ad chief Dave Dugan spent 12 years, is the biggest source of those hires.
