UK banks hit by Google Cloud outage

Halifax and Revolut were among a string of UK businesses hit by a disruption to Google Cloud on Tuesday.

Halifax, one of the UK’s largest mortgage lenders, and fintech Revolut on Tuesday said they were working to restore their online services.

Revolut said it was “experiencing a service disruption affecting multiple services”. Customers’ money and data were safe, the company said.

Downdetector, which collects user reports of website problems, on Tuesday showed disruption at banks, broadband providers and the UK’s Royal Mail.

It was not immediately clear how many companies were affected by the incident.

Google said that “multiple services” were “experiencing elevated errors and intermittent network failures” and that its engineers were investigating the problem.

Lloyds Banking Group, which owns Halifax, said: “We are aware of similar issues affecting other organisations and are monitoring the situation closely.”

This is a developing story
