Rivian Turned An R1S Into A Ghostbusters Tribute For Halloween

Halloween is approaching, and Rivian has decided that ordinary costumes aren’t enough. This year, the electric vehicle manufacturer is taking inspiration from one of cinema’s most recognizable cars.

Working with Sony Pictures, Rivian has transformed its R1S electric SUV into a modern interpretation of the legendary Ghostbusters Ecto-1. The resulting creation, appropriately named Ecto-R1, looks ready to chase supernatural trouble through New York City.

The original Ecto-1 was a heavily modified 1959 Cadillac ambulance, famous for its elaborate rooftop equipment and unmistakable red-and-white livery. Rivian’s interpretation trades the Cadillac’s enormous tailfins for the R1S’s boxy, modern proportions.

The project also accompanies a special Halloween software update arriving across Rivian’s lineup. Owners won’t need a custom-built Ecto-R1 to enjoy the Ghostbusters experience, although the physical tribute is certainly the star attraction.

The Ecto-R1 features the familiar red body graphics, Ghostbusters logos on its hood and doors, and distinctive white wheel covers. Its 22-inch wheels receive a bright finish that complements the movie-inspired appearance.

Rivian’s Special Projects team developed a custom rooftop assembly carrying sirens, spotlights, a radar dish, and equipment tanks. Apparently, all the accessories are functional, while the emergency lights are restored vintage units.

There’s even a hidden compass visible only when looking down at the vehicle from above. It’s an appropriately playful detail for a build designed to appeal to dedicated Ghostbusters fans.

Halloween Mode Brings The Ghostbusters Experience Inside

Beginning October 9, Rivian vehicles will receive a limited-time Ghostbusters experience through an over-the-air software update. Halloween Mode introduces themed displays, special lock sounds, animated characters, and customizable exterior lighting sequences.

Owners can choose effects inspired by Ecto-1, Slimer, Proton Pack, and other familiar elements from the films. A scavenger hunt hides characters throughout the infotainment system, while the parked-only Mallow Mash game challenges players to pop miniature marshmallow characters.

Trick or Treat Mode adds the Ghostbusters theme song and synchronized lighting effects. Some features can also be activated remotely through the Rivian smartphone app.

Bill Murray Joins The Halloween Celebration

Rivian has recruited original Ghostbusters star Bill Murray for a promotional video directed by Gil Kenan, who worked on recent installments of the franchise. The advertisement features Murray tackling a supernatural encounter with assistance from the customized electric SUV.

Fans can see Ecto-R1 vehicles at selected Rivian locations, including New York, Austin, Miami, and San Francisco. The Halloween software experience runs through November 2, giving owners several weeks to enjoy the spooky additions.

So, who you gonna call? Apparently, this Halloween, the answer is Rivian.
