Brazil’s presidential runoff is shaping up as an opportunity for the political right to cement its power across South America.

Conservative Flávio Bolsonaro is favored to unseat leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the Oct. 25 vote. If he prevails, he’ll align Latin America’s largest economy more closely with other regional powers including Argentina, Colombia and Chile. He’s also likely to forge closer ties with the US, where Donald Trump has resurrected the Monroe Doctrine in an attempt to bring the Western Hemisphere under Washington’s influence.
