CookTrace v1.4.0 released: self-hosted recipes, pantry and shopping list, now offline and on your watch

CookTrace is a self-hosted recipe manager, pantry and shopping list, an alternative to Mealie, Tandoor and Paprika. AGPL-3.0, single Docker container, native Android app and a Wear OS app, no telemetry and no cloud sync. Your recipes are a SQLite file on your own machine. Part of the TraceApps family: NutriTrace (nutrition), CookTrace (recipes / pantry / shopping), LiftTrace (strength / lifting), NoteTrace (notes / tasks / reminders). New here? It keeps your recipes and cooks them with you. Import from a URL, a photo, a file, or a whole Mealie, Paprika or Tandoor export, then cook from a full-screen Cook Mode that keeps the screen awake, with per-step photos, timers, an inline unit converter and scaling that handles fractions. Log a cook and the recipe builds its own history and rating. The pantry and the shopping list do the remembering. Track what you actually have, with brand variants, barcode scanning and expiry dates, and every recipe card shows how much of it you already have. Plan the week in the cook diary, send it to the shopping list, and the list skips what is in stock, groups by aisle and merges the same item across recipes. Clear it after the shop and it offers to put what you bought back in the pantry. It works in the grocery store, where the signal does not. The shopping list opens, edits and ticks off with no connection and syncs when you are back, and the Android app can also run entirely local with no server at all. It also has multi-user with shared Kitchens, OIDC SSO, full backups, an AI assistant that works with a local OpenAI-compatible endpoint, and an MCP server, REST API and webhooks that are off by default. It does not phone home. No telemetry, no cloud sync, no account anywhere else, and update checks stay off until you ask for them. The whole thing is one container. What v1.4.0 adds Offline mode, now in the web app too. The Android app already worked offline; now the web app does as well, in a browser tab or installed as a PWA, iPhone included. Built for a supermarket with no signal: the shopping list opens, you can add, tick, edit and clear, and it all goes up when you are back in range. Recipes, cookbooks, the pantry and the diary read from what the app has already seen, photos included, and anything that really needs your server, such as importing a recipe, says so in plain words instead of failing quietly. A Wear OS app. Your shopping list by aisle on your wrist, ticked off with a trolley in one hand, working with no signal. Press Cook on the phone and the recipe arrives on the watch as two checklists, ingredients and steps, and a step that says "simmer for 20 minutes" offers that timer instead of making you dial it in. Kitchen roles. A household can share one recipe library without sharing the keys to the server. The Head Chef gives each member a role: a Sous Chef edits what is shared into the Kitchen, a Line Cook cooks from it, and deleting, sharing onward, ratings and favorites stay with the recipe's owner. Search ignores accents. "oregano" finds "Orégano" and "cafe" finds "Café", in every search box, the REST API and the MCP tools. A kitchen kept in Spanish, Portuguese or French no longer looks like the item is missing because nobody types the accent on a phone. Two privacy changes that started as comments here. Update checks are off until you turn them on, and your server does the asking instead of every phone and browser asking GitHub. Fonts are served by your own instance, so Google no longer sees who opens it. Preliminary foldable support. Half open like a book, a recipe opens like a cookbook, ingredients on one page and the method on the other. Settings, the shopping list, the cook diary and Manage use the crease too, and dialogs and timers keep off it. The Docker image now starts on virtual machines whose CPU cannot run the PDF reader. Only PDF import is affected there, and it says so. Community contributions this cycle: code, a Spanish translation, bug reports and feature ideas from people running it. Everyone is named in the release notes. Security A file of the wrong type or over the size limit is turned away cleanly instead of causing a server error. Dependency advisories cleared this cycle covered moderate issues in upload handling, WebSocket handling and mail transport, and npm audit reports 0 for the app and the server.
