Apparently, percussive maintenance works on hard drives.

TLDR: I accidentally smacked the fuck out of a non working drive, and it actually fixed it. I had an old Seagate 500 gig drive that was seemingly a brick. I tried everything I could think of in both windows and Linux to get it working, and all attempts failed. The closest I got was enabling hot plugging on my gaming machine and then shoving the drive in while windows was already running. It detected it for a second, and then lost connection immediately. I needed more storage for my jellyfin server, so I grabbed that drive from the pile, and while under my desk messing with the server computer, I accidentally smacked it HARD on the bottom of my desk. I was trying to reach around and place it on top, but I absolutely WACKED the corner of the drive on the bottom of the desk lol. I almost didn't even bother putting it into my server pc after that, but since I already had the side panel off I figured I might as well. I was absolutely shocked to see it detected immediately. It formatted quickly, and held 100MB/s ish during a 300 gig transfer. Obviously I'm not storing anything important on it, but I'm happy to have a bit more space for jellyfin lol.
