I built an open-source, sovereign full-stack foundation with self-hosted Garage S3 and zero Redis (Apache 2.0)

Hey everyone, Like many of you here, I have a deep aversion to cloud lock-in, vendor trapping, and monthly subscription rent-seeking. When building modern web and mobile apps, teams usually get pushed into proprietary cloud ecosystems (AWS S3, Firebase, Supabase Cloud, Upstash Redis) that end up burning hundreds of dollars a month just on idling boilerplate. I spent the last 9 months building RexOne —a 100% sovereign, self-hosted full-stack application foundation spanning a Rails 8 API , React 19 web client , and an offline-first Flutter mobile app , fully open-source under Apache 2.0. 🏛️ The Self-Hosted Architecture: Self-Hosted S3 (Garage Storage) : Instead of piping uploads to AWS S3, RexOne uses Garage (a lightweight, distributed, self-hosted S3-compatible engine running on port 3100). All signed direct uploads, avatar crops, and media pipelines work natively against your own storage box. Zero Redis Overhead (Solid Queue) : Uses Rails 8 Solid Queue with hybrid fiber/thread workers backed directly by PostgreSQL. You don't need to spin up or maintain a separate Redis instance just for background queues and caching. True VPS Independence : Ships with Docker Compose and Coolify recipes—the entire ecosystem (Core + Web + Garage + Postgres) runs cleanly on a modest $10–$15/mo VPS (e.g. Contabo, Hetzner) without proprietary SaaS dependencies. Offline-First Client Sync : The mobile app (Flutter) uses SQLite via Drift for local persistence, meaning it works seamlessly offline and syncs changes upon reconnecting. Quality : Governed by strict architectural boundaries (Discipline-Driven Development) and backed by 1,690+ automated tests .
