I built an interactive 60-second checker to help UK side-hustlers know if they need to register for HMRC Self Assessment before the 5 October deadline
With the UK HMRC 5 October registration deadline coming up in 2 weeks, there's always a lot of panic among first-time freelancers, Airbnb hosts, and side-hustlers about whether they actually need to register. Because leaving registration to January causes an automatic £100 fine (HMRC takes 2 weeks to post your 10-digit UTR number by mail), I built a free, 60-second interactive diagnostic tool that checks people's income against current 2025/26 HMRC thresholds: tax-pilot.co.uk/deadline-5-october What it checks: • Side hustle / freelance turnover: Checks gross income against the £1,000 Trading Allowance • Rental / Airbnb income: Evaluates the £1,000 property allowance and £2,500 profit thresholds • Capital gains: Updated for the reduced £3,000 exemption limit • Child Benefit (HICBC): Updated for the new £60,000 threshold • The £100k PAYE myth: Explains the 2024/25 HMRC rule change where salary-only PAYE earners no longer need Self Assessment Tech Stack: Vanilla JS + modern glassmorphism CSS, zero framework bloat, hosted on Netlify, tied to our Chrome extension (TaxPilot) that auto-fills the HMRC portal in January. Would love feedback on the diagnostic flow and whether the explanations make sense!
