Dyson releases a $499 AI-powered toothbrush that has a 100,000-pixel macro camera built in to help you brush properly
Dyson has officially entered the oral care market, and it has done so with an AI-powered toothbrush that sounds like it belongs in a sci-fi movie, complete with a 100,000-pixel macro camera.
The Dyson CameraJet costs $499 and has a tiny camera built directly into it.
The camera uses AI to spot the gaps between your teeth and then fires a targeted jet of mouthrinse at them.
It is designed to combine brushing and flossing in a single session, while also showing you exactly what is happening inside your mouth.

The crazy CameraJet gadget was unveiled by James Dyson in Paris on September 1, marking the company’s first major move into oral care.
At the heart of the unusual toothbrush is a 100,000-pixel macro lens camera that works with Dyson’s Gap Optical Targeting system.
The camera analyzes 28 live images every second, allowing its machine-learning system to identify, track and predict the gaps between your teeth in real time.

When the system spots an interdental gap, the CameraJet can respond within 100 milliseconds by firing a conical burst of mouthrinse directly toward it.
Dyson says the system was trained using 470,000 dental images and the toothbrush itself runs on 16 million lines of code.
The company spent six years developing the device, combining its expertise in cameras, machine learning, fluid dynamics and sonic brushing technology.

The camera is also paired with a stroboscopic light that operates at 257Hz, helping illuminate the mouth while the brush is moving.
The actual brush head does plenty of work too, using dual bristles for surface and gumline cleaning, while Dyson’s variable sonic oscillation keeps the bristles moving rather than stalling against the teeth.
Dyson claims this technology can remove up to 69 per cent more plaque than leading premium electric toothbrushes in hard-to-reach areas, based on its external testing.

The CameraJet takes the idea of a smart toothbrush even further by connecting to the MyDyson app.
The tiny camera on the gadget can livestream footage from inside your mouth to your smartphone, while the app can provide cleaning feedback and coverage information.
That means users can actually see where the brush has been and get a better idea of whether they are missing certain areas.

There is also some clever engineering behind the mouthrinse system.
The CameraJet has an anti-gravity tank designed to maintain liquid delivery regardless of how the toothbrush is held, while the precision jet can deliver up to 0.15ml of liquid between the teeth.
The company has also developed its own low-foaming toothpaste and mouthrinse because too much foam could interfere with the camera’s view.
The company’s mouth rinse and toothpaste are designed to work together with the CameraJet system.

Each brush head also contains an RFID tag that tracks usage and tells the user when it is time for a replacement.
At $499.99, the CameraJet is certainly not a cheap toothbrush, but the company is clearly betting that some people will pay a premium for a device that effectively turns brushing into a miniature high-tech dental inspection.
And considering the company has somehow managed to put a camera, AI, a precision liquid jet and millions of lines of code into something that still fits in your hand, the CameraJet is certainly one of the more unusual gadgets the tech company has ever made.
