Tesla Plans to Debut its Cybercab at Launch Event on Thursday

Tesla is holding a launch event for its Cybercab, the company’s first vehicle designed to operate without a steering wheel or brake pedals, in Austin, Texas, on Thursday.

The company has invited a select number of Tesla fans to the event which will take place at 4:45 p.m. Central Time, but few additional details have been shared about the event. The company updated its Robotaxi app on Thursday morning by adding the Cybercab to its terms of service and previewed a feature on the App Store designed to allow passengers to choose between selecting a Model Y or Cybercab for a Robotaxi ride.

The Information reported last month that Tesla had told staff it was planning to launch the Cybercab in Austin as soon as the end of August. The company began allowing some employees to use the Cybercab for autonomous rides in late August and is now planning to roll the vehicle out more broadly to the general public, according to people with knowledge of the plans.

On Monday, Tesla registered 45 Cybercabs with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles – a necessary step before the company can begin using the cars in its commercial fleet. In total, the company has 420 vehicles registered for its Robotaxi hubs in Texas, which include Austin, Dallas, and Houston.
