And it has very little to do with money, sales, or the countless iPhones Apple shipped under his watch.

Cook’s final day as Apple CEO came on August 31, with John Ternus taking over as the successor of the gadget company the following day.

Rather than using his final message to celebrate Apple’s enormous financial success during his tenure, Cook focused heavily on the people behind the company.

In the email, Cook thanked Apple employees for their dedication and reflected on the role they had played in his own success.

“The truth is, whatever there is to say about my success, I know it is all because of you,” he wrote, according to the full memo published by 9to5Mac.

That’s particularly interesting when you consider just how dramatically Apple changed during Cook’s 15 years at the top.

When he became CEO in 2011, Apple was already one of the world’s biggest companies, but it went on to become an absolute financial powerhouse.

Its market value grew from around $350 billion to roughly $4.5 trillion, while annual sales increased from $108 billion to $416 billion.

There were also some major additions to Apple’s product lineup during the Cook era, including the Apple Watch and AirPods, while Apple’s services business became a huge part of the company’s success.

Yet none of that appears to be what Cook considered his proudest achievement.

The nine words that really stand out from Cook’s farewell are: “This place is proof that culture triumphs over everything.”

That sentence gets to the heart of Cook’s message.

Tim Cook went on to explain that Apple employees share a belief that what they build matters, along with a responsibility to leave the world better than they found it.

For Cook, then, Apple’s culture wasn’t simply a nice extra that existed alongside its products and profits; it was arguably the thing that made those achievements possible in the first place.

And there’s a slightly deeper point here.

Cook wasn’t necessarily claiming that he personally created Apple’s culture.

Instead, he appeared to recognize that a company’s culture is built collectively through countless decisions, interactions, and the way employees are treated.

That’s quite a wonderful way for a CEO to leave the stage.

After 15 years, Cook could have pointed to Apple’s enormous valuation, record profits, or blockbuster products as his defining legacy.

Instead, Tim Cook’s final message centered on the people who helped make all of those things possible.

That also gives John Ternus an interesting challenge as he begins his own tenure because he’s inheriting a company that is bigger and more powerful than the one Cook took over, but he also inherits the culture that Cook spent 15 years protecting.

Tim Cook isn’t actually leaving Apple completely, either, because he has moved into the role of executive chairman, meaning he’ll remain involved while Ternus takes the reins as CEO.

So while Tim Cook’s era may officially be over, his final email suggests that the part of his legacy he cares about most isn’t something that can be measured on the stock market, ironically at a tech company; it’s all about the people.
