Apple's new CEO John Ternus has just revealed his vision for the company as he replaces Tim Cook and starts work

Apple has officially entered a new era, with new CEO John Ternus taking over and Tim Cook moving into the role of executive chairman.

And while Ternus has only just started the job, his updated Apple bio has already given us a pretty good idea of what he wants the company to focus on.

It could be a very different approach from the one we saw during Cook’s 15 years at the top.

John Ternus is hardly a newcomer to Apple, having spent around 25 years at the gadget company and most recently serving as its senior vice president of Hardware Engineering.

That background makes the priorities highlighted in his new CEO bio particularly interesting.

One of the biggest themes is reliability and durability, with Apple highlighting Ternus’ work on techniques designed to make its products more resilient.

In other words, the new CEO appears to be very interested in making sure your expensive Apple gadgets can survive life outside the pristine environment of an Apple Store.

His bio also puts a huge emphasis on materials and hardware design, including work that has helped reduce the carbon footprint of Apple’s products.

His official Apple bio reads: “John has led much of the company’s focus in areas like reliability and durability, introducing new techniques that have made Apple products remarkably resilient.

“He has also drivenmuch of Apple’s innovation in materials and hardware design that have reduced the carbon footprint of its products, including the creation of a new recycled aluminum compound that has been introduced across multiple product lines, the use of 3D-printed titanium in Apple Watch Ultra, and advancements in reparability that have increased the life spans of several Apple products.”

His experience could be particularly significant for Apple fans, as the company has faced years of criticism over how easy its devices are to repair and upgrade.

The new bio makes it clear that Ternus sees longer-lasting products as an important part of Apple’s future.

Apple’s new CEO wants products to last longer and make less impact

The emphasis on sustainability isn’t exactly new for Apple.

Cook made reducing Apple’s environmental impact a major part of his tenure, with the company investing heavily in renewable energy, recycled materials, and reducing emissions throughout its supply chain, and the new CEO’s bio suggests that commitment isn’t going anywhere.

But there is a slight twist to his approach, though, because rather than sustainability being presented as a separate environmental goal, Ternus’ priorities tie it closely to the actual gadgets Apple makes.

Better materials, more durable products and improved repairability could all mean devices that stay in use for longer instead of being replaced every few years.

That is an interesting direction for someone whose career has largely revolved around Apple’s gadgets or hardware itself.

Of course, this doesn’t mean Apple’s new CEO is suddenly going to stop launching shiny new iPhones every year.

Ternus’ first major public-facing moment as CEO is already coming up, with Apple expected to unveil its next generation of iPhones at its September 9 event.

But his first day in the job has already given us a glimpse at what could define the Ternus era.

After 15 years under Tim Cook, Apple’s new CEO has a career deeply rooted in product engineering and hardware design.

And if his new bio is anything to go by, the next chapter could be all about building Apple products that are tougher, smarter and designed to stick around for much longer.
