Hundreds will aim to set Malört world record at West Loop bar

Sunday could be a historic day at a West Loop bar, as hundreds are expected to try setting a new Malört-flavored world record.

According to organizers, more than 1,000 people will simultaneously take shots of the iconic Chicago liqueur at Recess in what would be a world record.

Tickets to the event sold out quickly, but those still hoping to be a part of history will have a chance to participate, according to organizers.

The event is centered around Jeppson’s Malört, which has been distilled in the Chicago area since the 1930s and has recently seen a surge in notoriety.

The beverage is famously bitter, and it has become infamous because of Chicago-area residents giving it to unsuspecting visitors from other parts of the world.

Still, the beverage has a developed a cult following over the years, and Sunday’s event will see hundreds of people aiming to set a world record for most individuals taking a shot of the liqueur at the same time.

Those partaking in the event at Recess will, of course, get a mini-bottle of Malört to take the record-breaking shot at approximately 7:30 p.m., but there will be plenty of other events, including prize giveaways, live entertainment, and special celebrity appearances, according to organizers.

There will also be Malört-themed cocktails and food items according to organizers, giving fans of the beverage a chance to explore its world even further.

A portion of the proceeds for the event will go toward the Ravenswood Community Services, an organization which provides meals and groceries to those in need in the Uptown and Ravenswood neighborhoods in Chicago.

For those who don’t have tickets, there are still ways to participate. A livestream of the event will be available online, airing from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Participants are asked to register on the event’s website, and are encouraged to take a shot at home at 7:30 p.m.
