Russian aerospace forces officer killed in St. Petersburg car bombing

A high-ranking officer of Russia's Aerospace Forces (VKS) was killed in a car bombing in St. Petersburg on Thursday, August 27, according to newly surfaced details. The incident took place in the Slavyanka district—a neighborhood purpose-built to house military personnel.

A source linked to Russian security agencies said, "Today, a lieutenant colonel and his wife got into their car. As soon as he started driving, an explosion went off. The bomb was attached underneath the car, near the driver’s seat. After the blast, the vehicle moved another 20 meters." The lieutenant colonel died at the scene. His wife sustained leg injuries and has reportedly been hospitalized in a state of shock.

Authorities have not publicly revealed the identity or official position of the officer, but it has been confirmed that he served in the 6th Leningrad Army of the Aerospace Forces—one of the units actively involved in Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine since early 2022. This operational command is responsible for aviation and air defense across northwest Russia, and its aircraft have been used to strike Ukrainian cities with guided and unguided bombs. The same army manages the region’s airspace defense.

Reports also noted that the incident occurred in a district populated by military families. There has been a wave of discontent among pro-war Russian activists following the bombing of the developer of the "Upyr" system.
