Video captures moment an actual robot manages to pass 'I'm not a robot' human verification test

A robot has somehow managed to do the one thing the internet specifically told it not to do: pass an ‘I’m not a robot’ human verification test.

In a hilarious video, a wheeled robot rolls up to a screen, taps the ‘I’m not a robot’ box and appears to pass the human verification test successfully.

The irony is quite funny, as it straight up lies to the CAPTCHA system.

And it’s celebration is sure to make you think that maybe it might know more than it lets on.

The robot passes the ‘I’m not a robot’ test

This futuristic video has gone viral, showing a small, wheeled robot approaching a screen displaying a CAPTCHA with the familiar ‘I’m not a robot‘ checkbox.

It then carefully positioned itself in front of the display and used its mechanical setup to interact with the screen, and after the checkbox is selected, the verification appears to accept the robot’s input.

That is followed by the best part of the whole clip.

The robot suddenly spins around incredibly quickly, seemingly celebrating its victory over the system before continuing on its way.

It is a wonderfully absurd demonstration because CAPTCHA was created specifically to distinguish humans from automated systems.

CAPTCHA stands for ‘Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart’, and Google’s reCAPTCHA system has evolved considerably from the old distorted-text puzzles.

Modern versions can use behavioral signals, including how a user interacts with the page, rather than simply relying on the checkbox itself.

That means simply clicking the box isn’t necessarily the entire test, although to anyone watching the clip, it certainly looks like this robot has just pulled off the ultimate technological prank.

It celebrated passing human verification

The celebration is what really makes the video.

Rather than simply completing the task and stopping, the robot appears to go into a rapid spin, almost as if it knows exactly what it has just accomplished.

It’s like the robot equivalent of football players’ knee-sliding after a goal.

There have been other robots attempting CAPTCHA tests before.

One well-known 2017 video showed a robotic arm physically clicking an ‘I’m not a robot’ checkbox, while another artistic project used a robotic arm to repeatedly interact with a CAPTCHA.

But this clip has an extra layer of comedy because of the robot’s reaction after the apparent success.

It is also a reminder of how strange CAPTCHA has become as robots and AI systems get increasingly capable.

What was once a relatively straightforward way of separating humans from bots is now part of a much more complicated battle between automated systems and the technology designed to identify them.

For now, though, this robot seems to have found a much simpler solution: roll up to the computer, prove you’re ‘I’m not a robot’ and celebrate like you just beat everyone in a game.
