Moving Abroad and Prepaid plan

I have a prepaid phone plan for about $ 50 a month with unlimited data. I'm moving to Spain for the year in which I will get an eSIM. I don't want to lose my US phone number, as I will be traveling to the States for the holidays. What is the best way to go about this with an eSIM and want a Spanish number? Do I just keep paying the 50 per month while Im abroad ?
