Two Experimental Mobile Drawer Designs

Keiji Ashizawa has a background most architects don't: After gaining his degree, he worked with a metalworking shop that produced furniture and lighting. When he eventually set up his own architecture and design studio, the metal fabrication background continued to inform his work.

Ashizawa, who designs both buildings and furniture, created these two experimental mobile drawer designs that rely on a minimal amount of steel to provide a skeletal structure. Bon Drawer features gestural side supports joined by two horizontal bars.

Five small square-stock rails are attached to each support, and correspond with a groove in the drawers.

Two little wheels on the back allow you to move the unit, while the topmost crossbar serves as the handle.

Slybox uses even thinner tube stock, and preserves the same wheel-and-handles arrangement.

The drawers are graduated in size, and the topmost has a flip-up lid, allowing you to use it as a shelf or tabletop.

Ashizawa had both designs prototyped, but sadly these never made it into production.
