Are ratings useless then? I was limiting myself to A rated insurers. oh well too late now.
Probably not useless... but the whole MBS/CDO ratings fiasco 20 years ago certainly lives on in memory. I suspect if you limit yourself to A++ rated companies, those are the "boring balance sheet" companies Woot! was talking about. Of course, there aren't very many of them - but if they're paying out lower yields than lower-rated companies, I think I would wonder why that is. It's probably NOT just because they're greedy and can get away with it due to having a big familiar name. It's probably also because their underlying investments are, well, boring.
