People often talk about science as a noun. “Trust the science.” “The science is settled.” But really, science is more of a verb. It’s something we do, a series of steps we take to resolve uncertainty about the world around us.
This means science is never 100% final. It is constantly evolving and changing, as new evidence emerges or skeptics disprove old conclusions. When we describe science as a static noun – as “the science” – we preclude those possibilities. We create a false sense of finality, and we elide the messy work of actually doing science. That’s a disservice and a risk to our field.
Our new @FlagshipPioneer Substack aims to share more of the process of doing science, instead of just the outcomes. Glad to share some brief thoughts about why that’s so important and what we hope to achieve with this new initiative: flagshiplabs.substack.com/p/…
