Perhaps the answer lies in another hypothetical: Rather than a market drop happening just prior to retirement, what would you do if the drop was on the one-year anniversary of your retirement date?

One would hope that there would be a detailed understanding of retirement expenses and income floors prior to finalizing one's retirement date.
