Colour Display with the Aid of Monotype Attractors

A rather lovely folding publicity sheet issued by the then well-known Birmingham printers Silk and Terry Ltd., then based in the city’s Great Charles Street. It shows the use of Monotype ornaments as “Attractors”, in the forms of patterns and bands, and as designed here by E.J. Terry. In many ways they echo the contemporary use of such Monotype ornaments at Curwen Press, notably for the British Transport Commission, as the leaflet is hand-dated to November 1955.

In some ways the leaflet, by use of the titling typeface almost feels a little more ’30s or pre-war. It has arrived in my collection from the library of Ernest and Catherine Hill, both artists, and who had strong connections to Birmingham, Ernest being headmaster of the Bournville School of Arts & Crafts.
