Is darkness transparent?

If we're in a completely dark room with no light at all, how far does our vision extend?
We perceive only darkness, but is that darkness right in front of our eyes, or does it extend all the way to the walls?

Or in other words.

In complete darkness, do we actually see a black space extending into the distance, or do we simply lose all perception of distance?
