When do you know that is better to stop read a book?

I was recently reading The Cathedral of the Sea by Ildefonso Falcones and after roughly 500 pages of the book I had to give up, because I was fed up with the story progression that in my opinion was all over the place even though I cannot say that it was a poorly written book.
