Looking for advice on managing a remote team as a first-time founder [I will not promote]

I'm a first-time founder, and I recently hired my first employee. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a pretty bad experience, mostly because of poor communication and a lack of alignment on expectations. It made me realize that building a company is a completely different skill from building a product. I'm comfortable building software, but managing people, creating processes, and running a remote team are all new to me.
