[ Trivia ] George Renninger, the 19th century confectioner is regarded as the original creator of Candy Corn.
He originally referred to his classic Autumn treat as ‘Chicken Feed’. It wouldn’t become popularly named Candy Corn until after World War 1, when the American diet began incorporating more corn-derived foods.
As one of its original producers, the Goelitz Candy Company (now Jelly Belly) helped to popularize the candy. They ran ad campaigns including one in which a bold rooster characture declares himself the “King of the Candy Corn Fields”.
In the modern era most Candy Corn is produced by Ferrero under the Brach’s brand. They control roughly 85% of the market. The National Confectioners Association has estimated that about 35 million pounds of Candy Corn are produced each year. They have also declared October 30th to be National Candy Corn Day.
