Canva Support is a nightmare for NGOs: A story of absurd deactivations

I’ve been running a registered humanitarian NGO for years, but Canva’s support has turned our workflow into a circus. I’m sharing this to warn other nonprofits about their institutional bias. Canva keeps revoking our “Nonprofit” status because I, the volunteer President, am also a University Professor. Despite submitting all legal documents proving the NGO is a completely independent entity, they insist we are a “Higher Education institution” and block our access. We have been a registered NGO since 2014 and had been using the Nonprofit plan successfully for years without any issues. July 2026: Out of nowhere, our account was deactivated. Support claimed our subscription was “sold by a third party”—a total lie. I’ve managed it personally for years. August 2026: After proving there was no “sale,” they moved the goalposts. They saw my professional signature and decided the NGO was actually a university project. September 2026: They “temporarily” reactivated us for a month, promising a review. We sent the same statutes and deeds for the tenth time. October/November 2026: Deactivated again. They keep trying to force us into “Canva for Campus” or paid plans. We aren’t a school; we provide aid to vulnerable communities. We’ve spent months in a loop of “activation and deactivation,” losing access to hundreds of designs. The support responses are scripted, ignore the evidence provided, and show zero understanding of how NGOs operate. We are moving to more ethical tools. If your board members have academic jobs, be warned: Canva might lock you out of your work because they can’t tell the difference between a person’s job and an organization’s legal status.
