France’s Prime Minister Plans to Meet Students Next Week
French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu plans to meet high school students again as they call for a fresh round of protests and school blockades.
The meeting could happen next week, according to an official in the prime minister’s office.
Students returned to school on Monday after fall holidays, with 1 percent of high schools still being blocked in the morning, according to the prime minister’s office. The government made some concessions, including reforming the university selection process and creating more teachers’ jobs.
Youth-driven protests have erupted across Europe in recent weeks, from France to Germany, Belgium and Portugal. Students began to demonstrate in France in mid-September to denounce overcrowded classrooms, teaching shortages and outdated buildings. On Saturday, more than 300,000 people protested in the country, fewer than on recent weekends.
