I built an offline "emergency library" downloader with Claude Code — one command grabs a local AI, Wikipedia, maps, and survival manuals for when there's no internet
I built this project, and I built the whole thing with Claude Code (it even ships as a Claude Code skill — more below). What it is / what it does It's a one-command downloader that assembles a complete offline, no-internet "emergency library" onto any drive. When you run it, it asks only one thing — where to save — then downloads and sets everything up: A local AI chat that runs fully offline on CPU (no GPU needed), plus an offline document-Q&A app Full Wikipedia (article text) and offline maps for any country/region (default US) Survival / repair / medical archives (via Kiwix) and public-domain Army field manuals + medical PDFs A radio communications guide, bundled readers, and phone apps to port it to Android It auto-generates a clickable README.html index of everything, and writes all guides as Markdown and HTML It works on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and everything it downloads is free/openly-licensed or public domain. How Claude Code helped build it This was built almost entirely through Claude Code, step by step: Claude wrote the cross-platform installers (PowerShell + Bash), including dynamic version resolution for the AI engine, Kiwix archives, and GitHub/Internet Archive sources It built a small Markdown→HTML doc pipeline and a scanner that generates the root index It wrote the OsmAnd region resolver (pick any country/continent/sub-region) and caught a real bug where road-only map variants were inflating the file list It debugged platform details like CRLF vs LF line endings for .sh vs .bat It packaged the project as a Claude Code skill (/offline-emergency-library) so other Claude Code users can run the whole thing by invoking the skill — the only question it asks is where to save It's free to try 100% free and open-source (MIT) — no sign-up, no paid tiers, no accounts. Run it one of three ways: Claude Code: invoke the /offline-emergency-library skill Windows: irm | iex macOS/Linux: curl -fsSL | bash Repo (code + docs + the Claude Code skill): github.com/elhajahmadj/offline-emergency-library Happy to answer questions or take suggestions.
