From OpenAI's perspective, the new doublings are logical.
I think OpenAI played this pretty smartly. My theory is that OpenAI had been planning to double usage limits for quite some time. But first, they needed to reduce the $200 tier's limits. Otherwise, the $500 plan would have become much harder to justify. Here's the new pricing structure: $100 plan: 10x usage $200 plan: 20x usage $500 plan: 50x usage Before the planned reduction, the $200 plan offered 20x usage. If OpenAI had simply doubled that, it would now offer 40x. That means I could theoretically buy two $200 subscriptions and get 80x total usage for just $400, compared to 50x for $500. Of course, the usage would be split across two accounts, but that's still 60% more total usage for 20% less money. So I suspect OpenAI deliberately reduced the $200 tier before announcing the doubling, resulting in a much more balanced pricing structure. Obviously, we can't know whether this was planned all along, but the timing is certainly interesting.
