We built an AI agent for Instagram DMs and comments. Here’s our story, what we learned, and where we’d like your critique

Hey r/SideProject, we’re the team behind Inrō. We wanted to share how it came about and hear what you think. Instagram is where people raise their hand, and a lot of those hands go unanswered. If you manage accounts for a living, you’ve seen it: comments and DMs come in faster than anyone can reply. Before Inrō we built a pro Instagram inbox for tattoo artists (iOS app, no automation, no AI). Really good adoption but super hard to monetize. So we turned to automation: the first thing we built was comment-to-DM. Someone comments a keyword on a post and gets a DM with your link. But it felt super spammy, DMs were repetitive and not personalized. So we built an AI agent, trained on the account’s tone and real messages, plus a knowledge base. It answers DMs and comments and hands to a human when needed. The hard part was making it work inside a platform that already had live automations running for a lot of accounts, and getting replies out in a few seconds, because a DM has to feel instant. After that it was mostly small things from user feedback: pulling emails or phone numbers from the chat automatically, publishing and scheduling posts and attach the automation in the same step, so it's all in one tool. For people running multiple accounts, we built a dashboard to manage them in one place, and an MCP server to run one or more account from Claude or ChatGPT, etc. Since this sub likes critique: what would you push back on? If you’ve automated DMs for clients, how do you keep them from sounding like spam, and where do you draw the line between the agent and a human on a client account?.
