Opinion | How Do We Trust and Verify College Degrees?
While John Masko’s op-ed correctly identifies the split between artificial intelligence’s use in undergraduate and graduate studies, another AI-induced fissure within higher education is equally significant (“AI Splits the American University in Two,” Oct. 22). This division isn’t about whether students use AI. It is about whether institutions can verify that their graduates possess the abilities their credentials imply.
The central issue of AI in higher education is verification. Confirming student competence in the AI era requires redesigned assessments, supervised demonstrations, oral exams and defended portfolios. These methods are labor-intensive and come with high costs. Few universities are equipped to address this crisis in degree verification.
