Canada, Nvidia Back Cohere in Round at Over $20 Billion Value
Cohere Inc., an artificial intelligence model maker, is in the process of raising a large funding round at a $20.5 billion valuation, roughly tripling its value from a year ago.
The Canadian startup said Thursday that it has completed the first close of a financing round that’s expected to total up to $5 billion. The company said it has received commitments from backers including the Government of Canada and Nvidia Corp., as well as a previously disclosed $600 million from the Schwarz Group, a large European retailer.

The Canadian government, in particular, has agreed to invest up to $1.14 billion in Cohere. The company, meanwhile, intends to remain headquartered in Canada and is expected to invest roughly $1.2 billion in new computing infrastructure in the country by 2030, according to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
“The most powerful AI systems are concentrated in a very small number of companies, in a very small number of countries,” Carney said in prepared remarks Thursday. “That concentration carries risks: to cost, to resilience and to sovereignty.”
Once completed, the round would be by far the largest private fundraise in Canada’s history. Cohere declined to specify how mucoch of the $5 billion target has already been finalized, but Chief Financial Officer Francois Chadwick said the first close includes “most of it.” The valuation does not include the money raised.
Founded in 2019, Toronto-based Cohere has focused on selling customizable AI tools to businesses rather than consumers. Like other large rivals in the AI market, Cohere is developing AI agents as well as specific applications like coding, search and cybersecurity tools.

Chadwick said Cohere has drawn more customers to its platform by emphasizing security and AI efficiency, tapping into demand from customers to address rising computing costs and AI-driven hacks.
Chadwick declined to comment on Cohere’s current revenue. The company said annual recurring revenue increased more than 165% by the end of September compared to a year prior.
Cohere Chief Executive Officer Aidan Gomez said in October 2025 that Cohere could IPO “soon.” Chadwick declined to comment on any updated plans for a public listing.
