Reasons a book puts you off...
I read a lot normally, but I've been in a slump lately, and it's because i've come across too many books that just aren't very good. It has temporarily put me off reading. Mediocre books can do that, which is a shame. Here are some reasons a book might put you off: - The author is obsessed with how great looking her main characters are. How gorgeous/stunning they look keeps being repeated and highlighted throughout the book. Yeah, we heard you the first time. - The author takes you for dumb. The obvious is always explained when you just don't need it explained. We've worked it out already, thanks. - Too much detail. The author doesnt leave room for your own imagination. Every detail of everything is always spelled out. Paragraph after paragraph is spent describing the room, the garden, or what someone is wearing. - Way obvious plot/ending or tidy, unrealistic happy ending when the whole book was about catastrophe. Always a let down. - Cringey sexual references. You know, where the author sounds like a complete perv living vicariously through their characters. Ew. - Extremely annoying or detestable main characters, or pretty much everyone in the book is miserable or horrible. (Never Let Me Go is an example of this) - Book starts off really good, but by the time you're halfway through it turns to shit. - Book should have ended 100 or even 200 pages ago. - There's clearly no decent editor in sight. - The foreign translation is awful. - Too much letter writing in the book, or other bits in italics (beginning of Frankenstein with the weird, camp letters to his sister are an example of this) - Book is still published in old style english and it's a pain in the butt to read Can anyone recommend some good reads lol?
