Can gravitational fields snap and reconnect like magnetic fields?

Does gravitational fields snap and reconnect like magnetic field lines? A paper on arXiv claims the math allows for this in gravitational field "sheets". Except, it's the only paper in the discipline I've found on Google Scholar. Have there been similar ideas floated in the past? Does the physics make sense?
