More settings for real draft prospect ratings

In BBGM Real Players leagues, player ratings are based on player stats. It's not perfect, but it works somewhat well.

Setting ratings for draft prospects is trickier, because what should draft prospects represent? Previously there were two options. You could set the "Real Draft Prospect Ratings" to "Based on draft position" and then draft results look similar to real life. Or you could set it to "Based on rookie season stats" and rookies will tend to perform similar to real life.

I made "rookie season stats" the default, but there's certainly an argument that "draft position" makes more sense. Ultimately it comes down to personal preference and what you're trying to achieve.

But those two options are not the only options you might want. Some people want the best historical players to have the best draft ratings, which also makes some sense. "Rookie season stats" kind of achieves that, because good rookies usually have good careers and bad rookies usually have bad careers. But some players have abnormally good or bad rookie seasons.

The latest version of BBGM adds some more options here that I think will let everyone customize things pretty well to their liking.

The new options are:

  • Based on peak performance: Player ratings for real draft prospects are based on the best ratings they had at any point in their careers, scaled down to the level of a draft prospect. For active players, their peak is projected based on what happened to similar players in the past.
  • Based on career performance: Similar to peak performance, but based on the value of an entire career, so players with long careers will rate higher than players who were only good for a few seasons.
  • Random: Real draft prospects keep their names, heights, and other bio info, but their ratings are generated like random draft prospects, so their real careers tell you nothing about how good they will be.
  • Custom: Combine any of the options above. Each option gets a weight, and a player's rating is the weighted average of what each option would give them.

The default is still "Based on rookie season stats", because I still think that makes a lot of sense, although I am tempted to make it some "Custom" combination...
