I got too tired to read comics, so I built an app that reads them to me. This is a 1954 horror comic it voiced.

A couple of years ago I was working 60 hour weeks. Comics were the one thing I could still squeeze in, because they're short and episodic. Then I got too tired to even do that. I kept wishing I could just watch my comics the way manga gets an anime. So I built it. You drop in a comic (CBZ, CBR or PDF) and it: finds the panels and the reading order, and plays it panel by panel like a guided view reads every balloon aloud with a voice per character adds sound effects for the drawn sounds (the BLAMs and KRAKs) and a soundtrack under each scene The art and the words are never changed, it only reads what's printed. The voices are synthetic. The clip is "Carnival of Death" from Journey Into Fear #18 (1954), a pre-Code horror comic that's public domain now. Stay for the last panel. The other reason I built it: comics have never really worked for people who have low vision or are blind. So there's an audio description mode. A narrator describes what's happening in each panel before the characters speak, like described video for movies, and the reader works with screen readers. It can also help if reading is slow going for you, with dyslexia for example, or if you're learning English, because you hear every line while you follow the balloons. If you're blind or low vision and you try it, I really want to hear what's wrong so I can fix it. I'm one person, no funding, and I still have a full-time job, so some of it isn't perfect yet. It's on iPhone, Android, Windows and the web. There's a free library of old public domain comics you can listen to without importing anything. I'm hoping to work with creators next. I'd really like feedback, especially on the voices and whether the panel-by-panel view works for you.
