Exclusive: Physical AI Startup Tractian Becomes a Unicorn

Tractian, a 7-year-old physical AI startup based in Atlanta, Georgia, has raised $130 million at a valuation of $1.4 billion in a Series D funding round led by Sapphire Ventures. Tractian provides sensors to assess the condition of machines, predicting how long it will take for them to fail and recommending maintenance plans.
Many machines are “completely naked in terms of hardware instrumentation,” said founder and CEO Igor Marinelli. And even when equipment has sensors, the measurements from those sensors are not always monitored, he said. Tractian retrofits these machines with the dozen sensors it makes to measure quantities from vibration and temperature to pressure and water level, and provides AI-powered software to monitor and control them.
Tractian uses its data to customize open-source AI models, including Nvidia’s Nemotron, which are free for developers to download. The strategy shows how AI’s ability to cheaply analyze a variety of data is increasing the value of collecting more data. That is a lesson that many software companies have learned over the past year, as they have scrambled to store Slack messages and other digital traces of their operations. Tractian shows how the same process is now playing out for physical data.
Tractian’s annualized revenue crossed $100 million last month, and the company is growing at 90% year over year, Marinelli said. The biggest sector among its customers is food and beverage, but the fastest-growing is critical infrastructure, including AI data centers, which risk paying huge amounts of money to their customers in the event of equipment failures.
