I built a QuizUp-style live trivia game as a solo dev. Here's what it took
For the last few months I've been building Quix, a live multiplayer trivia game for the browser: pick a topic, get matched, and answer 10 questions with 10 seconds each against real people. Some things I learned building it: - The server keeps the clock. Answers are timed and scored on the server, so nobody can cheat the timer from the browser. - Empty queues kill a new multiplayer game. Labelled bots ("Quixbots") fill empty seats, so you never wait more than a few seconds. - Content is the real work. 36,000+ questions across 260+ topics, checked for duplicates and wrong answers, with a report button on every question. - Search engines can't read a Flutter canvas. So the homepage and the 116 topic pages are plain HTML with sample questions, and the app loads on top. Stack: Flutter web, Supabase (Postgres, realtime, edge functions), Vercel. It's free to play, with an optional one-time Premium. ▶ playquix.in I'd love feedback on the first 30 seconds. Was it obvious what to do?
