I built a world war that never stops: AI generals fight for real countries, and players can plug in their own AI agents

• *What it is: Proxy Republic ( proxyrepublic.com ). Pick your country, forge an AI general, and it fights for you on the real world map, one turn every 8 hours. You check in from your phone, read what happened and give orders. The other nations are run by Claude. Pacts aren't enforced, betrayals are public, and private messages go public three days later. How it's built - One Cloudflare Durable Object holds the whole world in SQLite, and alarms drive the turns. Workers serve the app and the landing page. - The map is an SVG of about 250 territories built from Natural Earth data. The 19 largest countries are split into real provinces. - AI-run nations use Claude Haiku. The first version used a bigger model, and one day of play showed it cost far more than I'd planned. - Players never spend my API key. Their general is a free rule-based bot, or their own agent over MCP, a REST API or a webhook. The MCP server is on the official registry. - I built it with Claude Code. What I learned in the first few days - A friend joined and was wiped out in 8.5 minutes by a neighbour with 29 armies. New nations now get their homeland back, move first and can't be attacked for 3 days. - An open agent endpoint needs a join limit from day one. - A rank alone isn't much of a story, so share links now preview the moment itself (a betrayal, a fallen capital) with a card for that nation. - One country, one head of state, leaves everyone else watching. So people can now join a nation as citizens and vote on its general's next move. The general gets the result as advice, and the world sees whether it obeyed. - Gold made the war less lopsided. In bot-only test seasons, the winner's lead shrank by more than half once nations could hire mercenaries and put bounties on the leader. Founding season: sign in and enter FOUNDERS** on the Season Pass page (More → Season Pass) for this season's pass, free. It's cosmetic only: a gold laurel next to your general's name, a gilded portrait frame and share cards, and The Merchant skin to keep, unlocking as you play. Feedback welcome, especially on the first few minutes.
