Your Million Stories
One of my best friend’s wedding was marked by not just a handful of big speeches but by many little speeches, too. All told, we heard 11 different people’s point of view on either the groom or the bride, and usually both of them as a couple. I had a small segment as well.
Even though many people talked about the same person, no two stories were alike. The bride’s younger sister first met the groom when she was 13 years old. She instantly recognized him as a kindhearted gentleman, and that impression was still there when she had doubled her age. I met the groom when I was eight. Our relationship is defined by inside jokes, shared nerdy hobbies, and endless conversations.
We heard the bride describe the groom in ways even his best friends didn’t know him. His college friends described him differently from his wife’s college friends, and so on. The same held true for the bride. And if their daughter could already speak, she would likely give us yet another point of view.
Remarkable, isn’t it? The version of your story which you keep spinning a little further every day in your head is only one of many. But out there, behind the eyes of every person you’ve ever met, lies one more version. There’s no such thing as “your story.” There are only your million stories.
In some, you are the hero you might not imagine yourself to be. In others, you are the villain who dashed their dreams. In many, you’re a sidekick at best, perhaps little more than an extra in the background of the screen.
There’s no way to control all these stories. If you’re lucky, you’ll hear more than a handful of them reflected back at you in your lifetime—and if you’re even luckier, you’ll recognize their common message despite all their differences: Your story is not written in stone. There’s no one predetermined way it will go, and each next chapter could be the one that turns it into a completely new book in someone else’s eyes. Keep telling your story as if everything is possible, and, maybe at your wedding, a birthday, or another big milestone, you’ll be privileged to hear the variants of it that prove it actually is.
