SNL got me actin' like an Aerial Tramway
Every generation believes that their Saturday Night Live cast was the best and that the current cast is the worst.
It just so happens that my generation’s SNL cast (mid ’90s) featured Chris Farley, Dana Carvey, Norm Macdonald, Phil Hartman, Adam Sandler, Mike Myers, Will Ferrell, and I have to stop now there’s too many absolute murderers.
So, when I say that my generation’s cast was the best, I’m actually correct. 😉
I still catch the show, mostly through YouTube clips, and I have to agree with previous generations that it hasn’t been truly funny for a very long time. Weekend Update still has its moments, but the cold opens have become laughless political gags and when was the last time an iconic character or sketch was created? The only modern classic I can think of is Washington’s Dream, which wouldn’t be what it is without Nate Bargatze’s delivery.
All that being said… I loved this sketch with Marcello Hernández and (especially) Mikey Day so much I’m blogging about it. It’s an absolute banger that hits on multiple levels.
Huge shout out to ❤️ and 🚡 for bringing FUNNY back to SNL. Oh, and I don’t want to forget the whole RBF crew: 🟧, ➗, 🤿, and 🏤
- It cracks me up how Joe Rogan calls good comedians “murderers” when it’s his stand-up routines that make me wish someone would drive a stake through my temple
- I actually loved James Austin Johnson’s Trump impersonation back when he first started. His version of Trump’s “weave” was a great caricature of the man’s unique ability to string together lies. For some reason they abandoned that and now the joke can usually be boiled down to: “Trump is dumb / selfish / corrupt”
- For comparison, my cast created: Hanz and Franz, Unfrozen Cave Man Lawyer, Bears Super Fans, Matt Foley, Celebrity Jeopardy, Mary Katherine Gallagher, Church Lady, Wayne and Garth, and the Spartan Cheerleaders
- Turns out Day co-wrote the first Washington’s Dream sketch, so he may be carrying the show on and off screen
- As the kids say these days
